The Laser Pegs 3D Light Board is a large light-up construction kit. Pieces are made of clear ABS plastic that snap together securely. Within each set, there are approximately 35 pieces that have small resistors and LED lights. When connected to the base and subse-quent pieces, they light up. The kit includes instructions for many structures or can be used for open-ended building. The building base doubles as a storage unit. 3D Light Board requires three AA batteries, sold separately.

The Power of Open-Ended Play

Description

The Laser Pegs connect securely. This is particularly beneficial for children who have involuntary movements and may inadvertent-ly knock a structure down. The lit pieces stay connected. Note: the other “construction parts” do not snap together as tight and may fall apart more readily.
The 3D Light Board base provides a space to place the blocks when building. It has tall sides to prevent the blocks from falling out of reach of a child.

Skills

Building the Laser Pegs helps develop and refine fine motor skills, such as pincer grasp. This helps children develop the skills neces-sary for daily living – like holding a pencil, brushing their teeth and eating with utensils or fingers.
Children learn to control their hand strength – not too hard or structure breaks, not too light or the pieces won’t stay connected and lit.
Cause and effect action is learned as children place a Laser Peg in the 3D Light Board and it lights up.
Two hands are used together cooperatively to push the pieces together or pull them apart.
The 3D Light Board enables play to happen at midline and can encourage a child to cross midline during play. Brain development is aided by activities that allow a child to cross midline, thus using both brain hemispheres in play.
Eye-hand coordination is used to pick up and place each block.
As children build, reaching and arm extension become a natural part of play.

Play Ideas

Have a child hold a piece in his left hand, cross midline and place it on the right side of the 3D Light Board. Continue until the row is filled. Change hands and complete the right hand crossing midline to place the Laser Peg on the left-hand side of the board.
If a child is unable to connect the pieces himself, have him choose which piece to connect next and the caregiver can connect it.
Use the structure as a night light room decoration.
Using a kitchen timer, give the child one minute to place as many pieces as he can on the 3D Light Board. Encourage him to beat his score in subsequent trials.

Adaptation Ideas

Place non-skid shelf liner underneath the 3D Light Board when building. This will help prevent the board from sliding away from a child.
Provide only the amount of blocks a child can be successful with without becoming overwhelmed. Gradually increase that number as a child’s ability and frustration levels permit.
Separate the pieces so a child has plenty of room to grasp each piece independently.
Special Note: There are three light modes: constant, flashing and strobe. Flashing lights can instigate seizures in some children. Use with caution and supervision.

Play Ideas

Children on the autism spectrum may continually build the same structure. Alter this by providing a different set of pieces or the same shaped Laser Pegs that are different colors to use so those structures must be different.
Place four Laser Pegs on the board and have the child look at them and then have him close his eyes. Take one block away, have the child open his eyes and determine which block is missing. This can be done with different shaped pieces or different colored Laser Pegs.
Talk about the structure as it is being built. Create a story around the structure when it is complete.
Build a structure and have the child guess what it is.

Adaptation Ideas

Provide verbal reinforcement during a child’s building activity. Be specific with how you are praising him. For instance, rather than, “Good job,” say, “That tower of four blue Laser Pegs is amazing!”
Give the child a few pieces and place the others out of reach. When he runs out and needs more, encourage him to verbally ask for another block.

Play Ideas

Think about an object to build and create it with Laser Pegs.
Take turns with another person to add to one structure.
Read through the steps of the instructions and work together to build the structure.
A caregiver can find the pieces for each step in the instructions and have the child assemble it.
A caregiver can create simple Laser Pegs structures of varying shapes and patterns and take photos of them for the child to recreatelater instead of the using the instructions. This will provide the child with a visual of the structure to assist with buildingand can help a child gradually work towards using the included instructions.
Provide the caregiver and child each with a set of the same blocks. The caregiver can build a small structure on the 3D LightBoard and then the child can repeat that structure with his blocks. Next time, the child can build something and the caregivercan repeat it.
Help a child understand adding and subtracting by placing four Laser Pegs on one side and one Laser Peg on the other side of the3D Light Board. Have him add the blocks together. This visual representation of a simple equation can help a child understandthe concept. For more advanced learners, work on percentages by using both the lit and unlit blocks and having the child figureout the percentage of lit blocks.
Create a memory game by placing one Laser Peg in the 3D Light Board. Turn off the base and have the child tell you what colorthat block was. Check his answer by turning the base back on.

Adaptation Ideas

If it is frustrating for the child that some blocks light up and others don’t, only give him the ones that light up. Show the child one Laser Peg and one construction piece and have him look closely at each block. Discuss why one will light up and the other won’t.
Limit the number of pieces given if the entire set is overwhelming. Gradually increase the number as a child’s ability and frustra-tion levels permit.
A caregiver can use tape on the floor to visually and physically separate the pieces needed to construct each section of the kit. This will help the child focus on those pieces and not all of the pieces that are included in the set.

A caregiver can place one Laser Peg on the 3D Light Board. A child who is blind or visually impaired can feel that piece and find a match to place on the board.
Provide the caregiver and child each a set of the same Laser Pegs. The caregiver can build a small structure on the 3D Light Board and then the child can repeat that structure with his pieces. Next time, the child can build something and the caregiver can repeat it. For children who have visual impairments, this activity can be done successfully by feel.
